Bed bugs are small wingless insects that feed exclusively on the blood of warm-blooded animal, such as humans. They are tiny, oval-shaped, flat and light to reddish-brown in color. They usually grow to about 5 mm in length during adulthood.

Bed bugs are so named as they are commonly found in warm houses and nearby or inside beds and other sleeping areas such as sofas. They are usually active at night and will feed on their hosts while they are asleep. Bed bugs can survive for months to over a year without feeding, waiting deep inside mattresses and detecting nearby hosts through the presences of body heat and carbon dioxide.

Infestation occurs when they are transported from other infested areas or items, such as through luggage & clothing, pets, wild animals or even through second-hand furniture (remember, bed bugs can lie dormant for many months without food).

 Risks:

  • Bed bug bites cause red bumps or welts and severe itching that last for days
  • Some people may develop severe allergic reactions to their bites, particularly if the person has been bitten over the course of many days and weeks.
  • Psychological effects
